Dentists in the UK are working hard to reduce their use of plastic. Plastic waste is a significant problem in healthcare, including dentistry, because many items are single-use for hygiene reasons. However, dentists are finding ways to cut down on plastic use while still keeping their practices safe and efficient. From changing materials to rethinking processes, there are growing efforts to make dentistry more sustainable.

    Reducing Single-Use Plastics

One of the biggest sources of plastic waste in dental clinics is single-use items like gloves, aprons, suction tips, and packaging. Dentists are replacing some of these with biodegradable or reusable options. For example, some clinics now use paper-based or bamboo products instead of plastic cups and floss.

UK dentists are also switching to reusable alternatives when possible. Sterilisation technology allows tools like metal suction tips and mirrors to be cleaned and reused safely, reducing the need for plastic versions. According to a 2022 report, the NHS produces over 133,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year, and dental clinics are a significant contributor. Cutting down on single-use items can help lower this figure.

Invisalign and Sustainable Aligners Reduce The Use of Plastic

Orthodontic treatments, such as Invisalign in Hertfordshire, highlight the ongoing plastic challenge in dentistry. Invisalign aligners are made from medical-grade plastic, which is not biodegradable. However, companies are now addressing this issue. Invisalign has begun exploring ways to use recycled or more sustainable plastics in their manufacturing process.

In the UK, some orthodontists also work with patients to minimise unnecessary waste. For instance, aligners are carefully planned and managed to avoid producing extras. Patients are encouraged to recycle aligner packaging where possible, contributing to overall waste reduction.

    Changing Packaging and Supplies

Plastic packaging for dental supplies is another significant problem. Many UK dentists are switching to suppliers that offer eco-friendly alternatives. These include packaging made from cardboard, paper, or biodegradable materials instead of plastic.

Additionally, dentists are offering patients sustainable options for at-home care. Bamboo toothbrushes and toothpaste tablets, which come in minimal packaging, are becoming more common. A 2023 study found that 80% of UK patients are open to using eco-friendly dental products, showing public support for these changes.

Dentists in the UK are making real efforts to limit their use of plastic. By reducing single-use items, rethinking orthodontic treatments like Invisalign, and switching to sustainable packaging, they are helping to protect the environment. Although challenges remain, these steps are making dentistry greener while still ensuring patient safety and care.
