However, recent research conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory suggests a promising solution to address these issues. Advanced recycling of post-use plastic (PUP) through pyrolysis presents an opportunity to reduce GHG emissions, enhance sustainability, and minimize waste. This article delves into the innovative approach of plastic-to-plastic recycling and its potential to transform the plastics industry while promoting a greener future.

    The first analysis of its kind, this study explores the transformative potential of recycling post-use plastic through pyrolysis, shedding light on its groundbreaking benefits. The key findings of this research indicate an 18-23% reduction in GHG emissions when manufacturing plastic from just 5% pyrolysis oil from PUP compared to conventional crude oil-derived plastics. These reductions are significant and highlight the environmental advantages of adopting advanced recycling practices.

     

    Pyrolysis: The Game-Changer in Plastic Recycling

    Pyrolysis is the cornerstone of this innovative approach to plastic recycling. It involves heating plastics to high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment, resulting in the production of pyrolysis oil. This liquid mixture contains various compounds that can be utilized as ingredients in the creation of new plastics. Importantly, pyrolysis oil can replace fossil-based ingredients such as naphtha and gases to manufacture essential monomers, ethylene, and propylene, used in plastic production.

    The study collected operating data from eight different companies with varying pyrolysis oil production processes between 2017 and 2021. Beyond GHG emissions reduction, the analysis considered various other environmental aspects, including fossil energy use, water consumption, and solid waste impacts. When compared to virgin plastic production, the most-likely scenario of incorporating 5% recycled materials showcased impressive reductions in these areas:

    • Fossil energy use: A reduction of 65-70%
    • Water use: A reduction of 48-55%
    • Solid waste: A substantial reduction of 116-118%

    By reducing these environmental impacts, advanced recycling through pyrolysis demonstrates its potential to transform the sustainability of the plastic industry.

     

    Global Implications of Advanced Recycling

    The adoption of advanced recycling methods is not limited to the United States alone. As these practices become more efficient and widespread, they are poised to play a vital role in achieving global sustainability goals. By reducing waste and GHG emissions, advanced recycling can convert hard-to-recycle plastics into high-value raw materials, reducing the reliance on fossil resources and minimizing the environmental impact of waste management.
